MATI® Programs



MATI® Foundations - August 12 to 17, 2012  

MATI Foundations is the essential course for anyone looking to broaden their perspective on the roles and responsibilities within Local Government. This 5½ day program is held each August at the University of Victoria and provides an extensive overview of virtually every facet of local government administration. Watch for the brochure in April each year on the LGMA website. Registration begins May 2nd and as this program tends to fill very quickly, interested participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible after that date.

A 2012 Foundations Program Brochure will be available closer to the course date.

MATI® Leadership - June 17 to 22, 2012

MATI Leadership is an innovative 5 ½ day residential program specifically designed for people in leadership roles in local government in BC. The program is a blend of theory and practice, with an emphasis on interaction and participant involvement through role-playing and case studies. MATI Leadership will be held in Squamish at Quest University.  A brochure and registration information will be available in April.

MATI® Advanced Communication Skills for Local Government Professionals - April 15 to 20, 2012

Working in small groups side-by-side with senior local government leaders, participants learn the skills necessary to resolving unique communication challenges as well as sharing strategies for improved communications skills. MATI Advanced Communication Skills for Local Government Professionals is a 5 ½ day program held annually on Bowen Island in April. The brochure and online registration are normally available in February.

MATI® Managing People - May 6 to 11, 2012

MATI Managing People, a 5½ day residential program held each May on Bowen Island, has been designed to assist supervisors and managers in local governments to build better employee-employer relationships through effective labour relations, collective bargaining, occupational health and safety and contract administration. The program also identifies and analyzes human resource requirements through job design and analysis and illustrates methods for encouraging staff development through orientation, training, career development and performance appraisal systems.

MATI® Community Planning for Local Government Professionals - September 30 to October 5, 2012

At this week long residential program held at the Lake Okanagan Resort in Kelowna, participants work with some of the most highly regarded planners in BC to learn to work more effectively with Council and community members on planning and development issues and to develop a critical understanding of various planning approaches. Topics covered include land use permits, regulations, bylaws, and subdivision processes. As well, participants will learn to apply the principal approving officer tools and will learn to effectively oversee land use planning consultants.

MATI® School for Statutory Approving Officers - October 28 to November 2, 2012

This week long residential program at the South Thompson Inn in Kamloops will provide participants with a comprehensive review of the duties and responsibilities of the Statutory Approving Officer along with best practices for carrying on this function.

Eligibility Requirements:
You are eligible to attend MATI School for Statutory Approving Officers if you work in a BC local government or First Nations jurisdiction and are the Statutory Approving Officer, Deputy Approving Officer, or the primary person responsible for the evaluation of subdivision applications in your organization.  Participation from provincial approving officials will be considered subject to space limitations.
A 2012 School for Statutory Approving Officers Program Brochure will be available closer to the course date.

MATI® Educational Credits

The Provincial Board of Examiners will grant elective credits for MATI Leadership, Advanced Communications, Managing People, and Community Planning for Non-Planners for those participants who take the courses for college credit.
