Policy 016: Career Promotion Policy

POLICY STATEMENT:

It is the policy of the LGMA to support local government organizations to promote careers in local government.

POLICY BACKGROUND:

The LGMA's Organizational Profile and Marketing component of its Strategic Plan commits the organization to promoting careers in local government. One specific strategy includes encouraging member organizations to participate in promoting local government careers.

POLICY GOAL:

To invoke various strategies that increase awareness of what local government does and the opportunities for careers in local government, ultimately leading to an entrance and/or migration of good people to the profession.

POLICY OBJECTIVES:

1. Individuals or groups representing local governments are eligible to request funding to participate in career tradeshow opportunities or to develop materials that promote local government careers.

2. Local Governments across BC should have an opportunity to access funds to promote careers in local government. Staff are directed to consider flexible funding schemes that recognize the differences in local government's capacity to fund promotional work and the desire to provide opportunities for more remote local governments to participate. Funding allocation shall consider a balanced regional distribution.

3. That the staff be directed to evaluate proposals from individuals or groups representing local government for funding that meet the following criteria:

a. Funds must be used in the broad promotion of local government jobs that extend beyond the promotion of jobs for one specific local government;

b. Funds shall only be used to pay for rental space for local governments to participate in job promotion opportunities or for the development of electronic or printed materials. Funds shall not be used to cover salary, travel or accommodation costs of participants from funded local governments;

c. Individuals or groups representing local government that receive funding from the LGMA to develop materials accept LGMA's proprietary rights to use those materials for its own purposes at the LGMA's discretion. Individuals or groups representing local governments that receive funds from the LGMA to participate in promotional opportunities shall recognize the LGMA's participation through acknowledgement as deemed appropriate by the Executive Director.

d. Requests up to $500 be dealt with by the Executive Director and that requests over that amount be referred to the Operations and Member Services Committee for adjudication.

4. Operational criteria may be established by the Executive Director as deemed necessary.
