Policy 004: Committee Establishment & Appointments

POLICY STATEMENTS:

It is the policy of the LGMA to authorize the Executive to establish committees and to appoint members to serve on sub-committees. There are three standing committees (Education, Operations and Member Services, and Special Initiatives and External Relations) whose purpose are to assist the Executive Board and the Executive Director with the delivery of the Association's educational programs, external relations and operations. In addition to the three standing committees there are various other sub-committees.

POLICY BACKGROUND:

The responsibility for the direction of the LGMA rests with the Board of Directors. A variety of committees have been appointed by the Board to focus on specific programs or topics. Committees serve in advisory, research and policy development capacity only.

POLICY GOAL:

It is the goal of this policy to appoint members to committees of the LGMA who have demonstrated an interest in contributing to the work and services of the LGMA and to involve the membership at large in the ongoing work of the LGMA.

POLICY GUIDELINES:

Board of Directors

To ratify committees, sub-committees, advisory committees, task committees and liaisons and to set terms of reference and appoint committee members.

Standing Committees

The appointment of standing committee members is delegated to the President.

The role of the standing committees is to provide policy advice to the Executive Board and to work with staff to develop recommendations and action plans for ratification by the Board.

Sub committees / Ad hoc committees

Sub committees may be established to provide advice and expertise on specified topics, programs and projects

Subcommittee working groups may be established to provide specific expertise and to perform tasks related to a specified project i.e. the elections manual.

When a Board member sits on a subcommittee he or she will report subcommittee activities directly to the Board. However when the committee is not represented by a Board member the subcommittee will report back to the Executive Director or designated staff member.
